How to Organize Your Closet
Step One: Organize garments by color
Step Two: Organize rows by garments
With that first tip in mind, I like to section my clothes with blouses on top, mini-dresses and pants on bottom. So if you’re still working that single low closet pole like how it came with the house (bleh!), please DEMOLISH that sucker immediately and hightail it to your nearest hardware store to install double decker racks like you see here STAT! You’ll use every square inch of the vertical height, doubling the space for under $100!
Step Three: Use slim hangers for a consistent look
Invest in slim velvet hangers (my fave’s from Costco HERE) to keep the look consistent and streamlined. Bonus points for its anti-slipping features, perfect for your silks and satins. They’re not the most heavy-duty hangers but at $15/pop for a 35-pack, you can afford to replace them when needed. I use basic walnut wooden ones for my coats and jackets, available HERE from the Container Store.
Step Three: Keep seasonal items in boxes for future use
Store hats, large handbags, and other seasonal items on the uppermost shelf of your closet. Since these items don’t get regular use, I like to place them in plain sight but out of rotation. I also keep a handy footstool tucked aside for these hard to reach areas. My favorite ones are from HomeGoods in an assortment of fun candy colors to match my closet.
Step Five: Roll sweaters to maximize space
Install a storage shelf system so you can stash sweaters, heavy knits, and boxes for all your smaller trinkets. I like to roll my sweaters up to maximize space while keeping them wrinkle-free. As evidenced from my travel essentials and packing guide here. Oprah taught me that decades ago and I’ve adopted that mantra since. I use the smaller boxes stacked atop one another to store gloves, beanies, headbands, and other loose accessories.
Step 6: Use freestanding garment racks for favorite items or seasonal items
Even though it’s a walk-in, my closet is still not that big. After allowing le bf to stash his belongings on the entire left side, I’m relegated to rolling out a freestanding garment rack for my seasonal items like winter coats and heavier knits. Which I can double-duty as a styling space come spring. No matter what anyone tells you, only invest in the commercial racks (here and here). Ikea and Target versions won’t last you past one season. Trust.
Closing Thoughts
It really helps to physically see everything you own. No more digging through piles of clothes in a forgotten corner of your bedroom. No more wishing you had something to wear when everything’s laid out front and center. Interior design is all about making thoughtful decisions to improve your everyday lifestyle. And organization is your first lesson when it comes to design hunnies!
Come back tomorrow to see how I store all my accessories since that teensy little walk-in’s about to burst at the seams y’all!
You won’t wanna miss it!
