Part 3 of our Budget Bedroom Makeover Series will teach you how to hack Ikea furniture faves: Kallax and Malm! We show you how to refinish old dated espresso laminate colors to a white and bright finish, make new leather cabinet handles, upscale plain boxes and more!
IKEA MALM
Step 1: Remove all drawers
Step 2: Sand the surface
Step 3: Wipe excess dust
Step 4: Use a foam roller to paint the primer
Step 5: Let it dry before painting a 2nd coat
Step 6: Paint an even 2nd coat
Step 7: Apply a top coat to prevent chipping
DIY LEATHER HANDLES
Step 1: Measure your belt/leather and cut into even pieces
Step 2: Shape off or straighten the lines
Step 3: Use a leather hole punch to create holes
Step 4: Measure and mark the placement of the handles on the drawer
Step 5: Drill holes into the drawer
Step 6: Drill the screw into the handle
Step 7: Drill the screws and handles onto the drawer
Step 8: Use a nut to secure the back of the drawer
IKEA KALLAX
Step 1: Sand the surface
Step 2: Wipe excess dust
Step 3: Use a foam roller to paint the primer
Step 4: Use a brush to paint the corners
Step 5: Let it dry before painting a 2nd coat
Step 6: Paint an even 2nd coat
Step 7: Apply a top coat to prevent chipping
STORAGE BOX UPSCALE
Step 1: Assemble the boxes
Step 2: Place the box onto the paper and trace. Leave about an inch or more to fold over the edges.
Step 3: Cut the paper.
Step 4: Trace the handles to create a hole.
Step 5: Score and cut the handle .
Step 6: Use a spray adhesive to apply the paper to the box.
Step 7: Flatten the paper and fold in the edges.
