Ask me what my favorite type of cuisine is and I will almost always exclaim FRENCH!!!

Why French?

I love the aromas, I DIE for butter, and don’t even get me started on the plethora of stinky cheeses humminaaaa huminaaaaa. So when Traditions by Pascal closed earlier this year to make way for another dining establishment, my heart leaped out of my chest, plummeted on a nearby butcher block, and was bludgeoned to death by rusty cleavers knowing full well that yet another one bit the dust. Mind you, I don’t even think Traditions was that spectacular, but when 1 out of maybe 4 good French eats closes down around town, I scream bloody murder and weep until someone answers my call.

Juliette Kitchen and Bar

On the Menu

Smoked ocean trout, wild arugula, stewed grapes, baby heirloom tomatoes, pickled onion, honey lime vinaigrette.
Like summer on a plate. Save for the fact that it’s fall, so this dish was lighter fare compared to those below. The perfect starter to cleanse your palette after the honkin’ plate of cheese.
Farro risotto, squash blossoms, trumpet mushroom, swiss chard, tomatoes, herbs
Don’t order this risotto still expecting arborio rice when the description clearly states “farro.” A direct descendant of wheat and barley, this whole grain has a buoyant, chewy bite taking on all the flavors of the creamy, herby reduction and mushrooms. Still jam-packed with flavor even though its missing some protein. Delish!
Gnocchi, braised ox tail, dried tomatoes, trumpet mushrooms, artichokes, pickled celery, radishes, and braising jus.
The gnocchi was wayyyyyy too mushy for my taste and I can barely make out any ox tail, so for me, the sundried tomatoes were clearly the star. Quite sad, but true.
Pork cheeks with pumpkin, hazelnut, and sage. Aside from the cheese platter, my FAVE dish of the night.
During spring/summer they serve this dish with braised peaches so I was hoping for something just as aromatic and fruity. Instead, during fall/winter, they substitute the peaches for cubed pumpkins, a starchy component which elevated this dish to super COMFORT food. Very Asian in flavor, the hazelnut and sage combination reminds me a bit of ragout stock like my mama makes. Down home and very Southern. A+!
Salted caramel pot de crème, spiced pepita brittle, vanilla crème fraîche, chocolate crinkles, and chocolate cookies
Every meal’s gotta end in decadence right?? AMAZINGNESS in every bite. I crumbled up the cookies and dunked them all in that sugary sweet pot o’ L-O-V-E! Perfect mix of salty and sweet, like ALL desserts should aim to be!
The adjacent wine bar- buy and bottle and enjoy $5 corkage fee! Unheard of in these Newport parts!!
My view of the bar from the communal tables. I love that more and more dining establishments offer the walk-in option versus getting booked up with reservations months in advance. I’m ALL for promoting spontaneous date nights with my dude!

Know Before You Go

Don’t fret my pets! Pascal Epicerie and Wine (the sister space to Traditions) is still up and running and perfect for patisseries and takeout. I’d reserve a table for lunch at Juliette’s then zip on over to Pascal for yummy desserts and their famous pistachio macarons! Best of both worlds!*
Most would classify Juliette Kitchen and Bar as “New” American joint sourcing mostly local farm ingredients to masterfully combine in the kitch, but to me, Pascal will always be there. Cozy and quaint, the faint scent of French-capades wafting through the wood beams onto unsuspecting guests. Some, like myself, remember the good ol’ days and yearn for the familiar. But more often than not, some (also, like myself) follow the food so to hell with Traditions! Word!

Bon appetit mes amis!

  1. Aged gouda is so so good! Esp paired with some pepperoncini peppers. But my fav stinky cheese by far is aged gruyere. So heavenly! And who doesn't love a good mushroom risotto done right? Love this delicious post!
