One of the pure joys of living in a new city is discovering notable eateries to try out in town.

The Vibe
What makes the discovery even more delightful is being able to share good eats with great friends that you don’t typically spend time with because of distance, scheduling, etc, etc. This particular couple’s dinner took us to the heart of downtown LA (a mere detour from both our place and their work, love it when that happens!) where we hobnobbed with locals looking for the freshest catch of the day: Sugarfish Sushi. What transpired after the initial first impression (low level lighting makes for über-romantique setting) was nothing short of AMAZING…and those who know me knows I RARELY say that about sushi.
On the Menu
What to order
Seasoned Sugarfishers know to order 1 of 3 menu options: Trust Me ($30 omakase), Trust Me/Lite ($20), or the Nozawa ($40). I opted for the Trust Me/Lite so I can fill up on other a la carte goodies not available on any of the above.
I always order sashimi when eating sushi since I never like filling up on the rice. But Sugarfish’s melt-in-yo’-mouth, rich and warm gluten was simply stunning in chewy texture and buttery in taste as it literally dissolved after the first bite. Sure makes regular ol’ tuna seem like the most spectacular thing on the menu.
Which it wasn’t ‘cuz guess who took the cake that night???
The Verdict
The PERFECT traditional, down-home, comfort sushi like you’d expect to find at every street corner in Tokyo. Love that they print their culture right there on the menu so sushi neophytes feel welcomed rather than shunned for improper sushi etiquette. Eat your sushi RIGHT AWAY they command! So simple, so succinct, I love it!
Know Before You Go
Sugarfish doesn’t take reservations so go early on any night (6:30pm is perfect for dinnertime) and grab an ice cold Sapporo while you wait. Or do what any Angeleno would do and hop over to Bottega Louie right across the street to bag a combo box of their famous macarons for a sweet treat before or after the meal. You can thank me later ;D*
Bon appétit mes amis!
